The beautiful, bright red berries of the hawthorn tree ripen in late summer and taste a bit like apple. Indeed they should, as the hawthorn tree is in the same family as the apple tree and the rose bush. The berries are often used, not surprisingly, considering their sweet taste and bright red color.
Hawthorn Berry is traditionally used for used for ailments of the heart and blood vessels such as congestive heart failure (CHF), chest pain, and irregular heartbeat. It is also used by herbalists to relieve effects of both low blood pressure and high blood pressure, “hardening of the arteries", and high cholesterol. A relative of the rose family, hawthorn has been used for its diuretic effects, it can reduce fluid buildup, which means it can also improve symptoms of congestive heart failure. Hawthorn berries may also relieve some effects of kidney problems.
